Second ranked Alabama dominated Michigan 41-14 in the biggest game of ranked opponents this weekend, on Saturday night, at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas. This game didn’t take long before it was out-of-hand. Alabama was leading 31-0 with 4:31 left in the second quarter. Michigan was overwhelmed by the Crimson Tide’s powerful offensive and defensive lines. Alabama rushed for 232 yards to only 69 for Michigan, holding Heisman Trophy hopeful Denard Robinson in check.
Top ranked USC easily beat Hawaii 49-10, along with many of the ranked teams winning easily. However, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Stanford and Florida all struggled against huge underdogs, but eventually prevailed. Normally there is an upset or two in the first week, because a ranked team is over-rated in the preseason poll, or a sleeper appears early in the season.
Michigan State beat Boise State on Friday night, 17-13. With TCU now in the Big 12, Boise State was the only remaining probable BCS buster. Since they don’t belong to a major conference, if they would have gone undefeated, then it screws up the normal matches for the BCS games in January. But Boise State lost, so there shouldn’t be any undefeated teams claiming they’ve been kept out of national title contention.
The funniest college football story of the weekend, happened at Kent State on Thursday night in their 41-21 victory over Towson. Kent State punted to Towson, and the ball grazed returner Derrick Joseph’s arm, so Kent State linebacker Andre Parker went after the live ball. He picked it up at the Towson 7 and started running the wrong way with the ball. He went 58 yards before, for some reason, two Towson players tackled him near the sidelines. So you have a guy running the wrong way, but he didn’t make it to the end zone for a safety, because the other team tackled him. Once the rules of a muffed punt are thrown into this odd play, the ball belonged to Kent State on the Towson 7 yard line. A muffed punt can not be advanced, either direction, so all the wrong way running and the opponents chasing and tackling him, didn’t count for anything.
