Thursday night the New York Giants totally dominated the Carolina Panthers on there way to a 36-7 win in Charlotte, NC. I laughed as the so-called experts on ESPN picked the Panthers to win the game. Other than the amount of injuries the Giants had, I saw no reason to think they would beat the defending Super Bowl Champions.
To be honest, I just don’t understand all the Cam Newton hype. Last year he had 21 touchdowns passing and 17 interceptions, with an 84.5 quarterback rating, and he was in the Pro Bowl. By the way, he was embarrassingly bad in that Pro Bowl. I think he threw 4 interceptions in limited action. Yeah I know, he had 14 touchdowns rushing, a record for a quarterback. But Carolina ended the season 6-10, and this year they have started 1-2. Picking him to outplay Eli Manning, the Super Bowl MVP, is absurd.
The Giants jumped out to a 23-0 lead, before the Panthers finally scored. Newton ran it in from 1 yard out, then did his routine where he’s supposedly peeling off his shirt to reveal his Superman “S”. Yes he did this when his team was trailing 23-6. That’s the kind of cockiness I can’t stand. Then at the press conference he looked more like a depressed Clark Kent, than Superman.
I know Cam Newton won the Heisman trophy, which he definitely deserved, for his performance at Auburn in 2010. However, I wonder why we hear so much more about Cam Newton, with his 7-12 record as starter of the Panthers, than we do about Andy Dalton of the Cincinnati Bengals. Dalton led the Bengals to the playoffs as their rookie quarterback, with a 9-7 record last year. The Bengals were better than the Panthers to start with, but leading them to the playoffs in his rookie year is quite impressive. Dalton was also in the Pro Bowl last year. Just as an example, Dalton threw 3 touchdowns in his last game, while Newton had none, but 3 interceptions. Can we settle down with the Cam Newton hype, until he at least leads his team to the playoffs?
