The only remaining undefeated teams in the NFL after just 3 games, are the Arizona Cardinals, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals have been the most dominant of these teams, with a 47-point differential in 3 games.
Cincinnati started the season with a road win over the Baltimore Ravens 23-16, and followed that up with 2 home wins. They beat the Atlanta Falcons 24-10 in Week 2, and thumped the Tennessee Titans 33-7 on Sunday.
The Bengals have only surrendered 33 points in their 3 wins, the lowest amount in the NFL. But their offense has been quite good also, averaging almost 27 points per game, which is the 6th most in the league. Cincinnati did win the AFC East last season, but this has been an impressive start to their season.
The Arizona Cardinals have sole possession of the lead in the NFC West, which is the strongest division in football, with the defending champion Seattle Seahawks, and the San Francisco 49ers, along with the St. Louis Rams.
Arizona started the season with a narrow 18-17 win over the San Diego Chargers at home, then beat the New York Giants 25-14 on the road, and a come-from-behind 23-14 division win over the 49ers at home on Sunday.
As you can see from their scores, the Cardinals are winning with their defense. With starting quarterback Carson Palmer out with an injury, they still have won with back-up Drew Stanton filling-in for the last 2 games. Even when Palmer returns, defense will remain the key to winning for the Cardinals.
The last of the remaining undefeated teams is the NFC East-leading Eagles. The Eagles have taken a different approach to winning their first 3 games. They are 2nd in points scored, and have come back from double digit deficits in all of those games.
Philadelphia started the season with a 34-17 easy win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, if you just look at the final score. However, they trailed at halftime 17-0. Then in their 2nd game, they, along with some help from help from the refs, came back to beat the Colts in Indianapolis 30-27.
On Sunday, the Eagles beat the Washington Redskins 37-34 at home, in the best shootout of the young season so far. Eagles quarterback Nick Foles and Redskin back-up Kirk Cousins each threw for 3 touchdown passes, but the Eagles ended up winning in the end. RG3 may have trouble getting his job back in Washington, once he returns from injury.
Which of these teams is most likely to finish with the best season? While defense wins championships, just ask the Seahawks about that, I’m not comfortable with the Cardinals’ quarterback situation. Their defense can carry them, but not deep into the playoffs.
The Bengals have been to the playoffs 3 years in a row, but haven’t won a playoff game, with Andy Dalton at quarterback, but he is a solid player, to complement their defense. Also, in the AFC, other than the Denver Broncos and the New England Patriots, there really isn’t another formidable team to get past.
The Eagles have an easy division, and their fast-paced offense seems to wear down opposing defenses at the end of games. If Foles can continue to play like he has in the last year, I think the Eagles have the best chance to make a strong run for the Super Bowl out of the remaining undefeated teams.
