The Clippers Choke, Rockets Make It To The Conference Finals

The Los Angeles Clippers brought a 3-2 series lead back home, and then proceeded to lose Games 6 and 7 to the Houston Rockets, and once again not make it to the Western Conference Finals.

The Clippers had a 19-point lead in Game 6, in Los Angeles, and appeared to be on their way to their first conference finals in their history, but it all fell apart in embarrassing fashion. The Rockets outscored the Clippers 51-20 from that point on, to pull away for a 119-107 victory.

All hope wasn’t lost for the Clippers however. They still had a Game 7, but it would be in Houston. The Clippers actually had a 3-1 series lead, and became the 9th team in NBA history to lose a series after winning 3 of the first 4 games.

The Clippers, which is common in their history, failed to come through when they needed to. They lost Game 7 113-100, and were sent home from the playoffs earlier than they expected…again.

The Rockets, who are the #2 seed in the west, will face the top seeded Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference Finals, that starts on Wednesday in Oakland. The Warriors struggled against the Memphis Grizzlies, falling behind 2 games to 1, but won the last 3 games of the series to advance to the conference finals for the first time since 1976.

This is Golden State’s year. They will beat the Rockets in 5 games, and go on to the NBA Finals.

In the east, the top 2 seeds also will meet in the Conference Finals. The Atlanta Hawks beat the Washington Wizards in 6 games, to earn their first conference finals berth since 1971. The Wizards thought they forced overtime in Game 6, but Paul Pierce’s tying 3-pointer was ruled to have left his hand after time expired.

The Hawks will face the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals. The Cavaliers took down the Chicago Bulls in 6 games also, finishing off the Bulls with a 94-73 beatdown in Chicago.

Cleveland should eventually win this series, but it will probably go 6 or 7 games. The Hawks actually beat Cleveland 3 of the 4 games they played during the regular season, But this is the playoffs, and the Cavaliers have a guy named LeBron James on their team. He will be the difference, and make his 5th NBA Finals in a row. The last 4 were with the Miami Heat.

This year’s conference finalists aren’t your normal combatants. There are no San Antonio Spurs, Los Angles Lakers, Boston Celtics, Chicago Bulls or even Detroit Pistons. If the Clippers would have made it, the 4 teams would have even been more unusual. Look for the Warriors to beat the Cavaliers in the NBA Finals, as Steph Curry wins the MVP and the Finals MVP award within a month.

Fight Of The Century? Not Even Close.

In the latest supposed Fight of the Century, Floyd Maywether defeated Manny Pacquiao by a unanimous decision to retain his welterweight titles. Was it a great fight? Not by a longshot.

Mayweather improved to 48-0 with 26 wins by knockout, while Pacquiao dropped to 57-6-2 with 38 knockouts. One judge scored the fight 118-110, and the other 2 had it 116-112. By scoring the fight 118-110, that means that judge only had Pacquiao winning 2 rounds, which is ridiculous. I thought Mayweather won the fight, but Pacquiao won 4 or 5 of the 12 rounds.

Mayweather is a boring fighter. He is a counter puncher, which means he waits to react when the opponent pushes the action, then he attempts to avoid punches, and throw a few of his own, usually in retreat. He’s very good at it, but it’s still boring.

Pacquiao tried to make a fight out of this bout, especially in the first 6 rounds, but he didn’t really push the action as much in the last half of the fight. Fighters used to get credit for forcing the action, but I guess they don’t anymore. No wonder boxing has lost so much of it’s popularity, before this match, which should have occurred at least 5 years ago.

Mayweather avoided this fight for several years, before finally agreeing to fight Pacquiao, now that both are in their late 30s. Pacquiao is 36 and Mayweather is 38. I sure hope there is no rematch for this fight. Anyone who would pay to see these 2 fight again, needs their head examined.

What was with the Burger King guy in Mayweather’s entourage? I’m sure he made a lot of money allowing that, but what a freakshow. Also, was that Jimmy Kimmel with the black hat following Pacquiao into the ring?

After all the pre-fight hype, it still started an hour later than it was supposed to. All of this reminds me why I lost interest in boxing. I wasn’t even planning on watching this fight, but my friend had the fight at his birthday party.

Apparently, long gone are the good fights, involving Muhammad Ali, George Frazier, George Foreman, Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Marvin Hagler, and others from a long time ago. Mike Tyson raised interest in boxing of course, but his fights usually didn’t last through the first round, so they were disappointing as well.

If this was the Fight of the Century, then I guess I don’t need to watch another boxing match for the next 85 years.

Round 1 In The NHL Playoffs Is Over…Almost

The first round of the NHL playoffs is over in the Western Conference, but not in the Eastern Conference yet. The Anaheim Ducks will face the Calgary Flames in the 2nd round, while the Minnesota Wild will play the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Ducks swept their first round opponent in 4 games, the Winnipeg Jets. The Jets ended the season hot, but were cooled down quickly by the top seeded team in the Western Conference. The Ducks actually trailed after 2 periods in the first 3 games of the series, but like they did 12 times in the regular season, they turned that deficit into a victory. Once again, the Ducks weren’t taken seriously by many, going into the playoffs. But don’t sell them short.

Calgary finished off the Vancouver Canucks in 6 games, after coming back from a 3-0 first period deficit in the final game. Former Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller will face his old teammates in the playoffs for the first time. This was the Flames’ first win in a playoff series in 11 years. Look for Anaheim to beat Calgary in 5 games, and move on to the Western Conference Finals.

The St. Louis Blues finished off another disappointing appearance in the playoffs with a 6-game series loss to the Minnesota Wild. In a series featuring no 1-goal games, the Wild broke a 2-2 series tie, winning games 5 and 6, despite 6 goals by the Blues’ Vladimir Tarasenko in the series.

Chicago eliminated the Nashville Predators in a 6-game series, which included double and triple overtime wins by the Blackhawks. Nashville’s Colin Wilson led the way in goal scoring with 5 in this series, but Jonathan Toews had 8 points for Chicago. I’m picking Chicago in a 7-game series over the Wild, and will face Anaheim in the conference finals.

The Eastern Conference is a lot more unsettled than the West. The New York Rangers and Montreal Canadiens have moved on to the 2nd round, but the other 2 series are still going. The Rangers knocked out the Pittsburgh Penguins in 5 games. What happened to all those Stanley Cups that Sidney Crosby of the Penguins was going to win? He’s still stuck at 1.

Montreal won the first 3 games of their series with the Ottawa Senators, but after Ottawa won the next 2, the Canadiens finished them off in Game 6 on Sunday, with a 2-0 win in Ottawa. Montreal goalie Carey Price had 43 saves in the final game.

The New York Islanders forced a game 7, after beating the Washington Capitals on Saturday 3-1. Game 7 is in Washington on Monday night. The Detroit Red Wings lead their series with the Tampa Bay Lightning 3 games to 2, and will have a chance to end it at home on Monday, but if they fail, Game 7 will be back in Tampa Bay on Wednesday.

The Rangers will play the eventual winner of the Islanders-Capitals series, while the Canadiens will face the Red Wings-Lightning winner. I would like to see a New York match-up between the Rangers and Islanders, and I still think the Lightning will move on, to face Montreal in the 2nd round.

Jordan Spieth Wins His First Masters

Jordan Spieth won his first Masters golf tournament in record-breaking style, as well as being the first wire-to-wire winner since 1976. Spieth tied the lowest 72-hole record in Masters tournament history, at -18. He also had the most birdies in one tournament at 28. This was Spieth’s first major victory of his career.

Spieth beat both Phil Mickelson and Justin Rose by 4 strokes, and #1 player in the world, Rory McIlroy by 6 strokes. Also of note, Tiger Woods showed some life, finishing tied for 17th, but 13 strokes back of Spieth. This was the first tournament that he has finished under par in almost 2 years, if you can believe that.

Will Jordan Spieth replace Tiger Woods as the next great American golfer? He’s only 21, and from Dallas, Texas. He’s 4 years younger than McIlroy, but has been steadily getting better in the past few years. It seems as if these two, for the most part, will be the future in the men’s golf game.

I’m not a huge golf fan to be honest. But while I was having lunch on Sunday, I was watching the Masters. Maybe it was just that point in the tournament during the final round, but no one looked particularly impressive to me. I saw Rose and Woods hit drives into the crowd, and Spieth was even struggling in his putting during the time I watched. I was thinking I could play that well, but of course that’s absurd, isn’t it?

The results of Spieth for the entire Masters shows how well he played all 4 rounds, especially the first 2 rounds. He set the 36-hole and 54-hole records at the Masters this past weekend. He was already -14 halfway through the tournament.

Like always, much of the attention went to Woods. He is a 4-time Masters champion, but is now out of the Top 100 golfers. It was good to see him his game improve, but I don’t think he will ever get his game back to even close to where it was. Can we start focusing mainly on the winners, and upcoming stars, then those in the twilight of their career?

The next major is the U.S. Open in June. Can Spieth win another, or will McIlroy reassert himself, or will a new star appear?

Duke Beats Wisconsin To Win Another NCAA Championship

On Monday night, the Duke Blue Devils beat the Wisconsin Badgers 68-63 to win the Men’s NCAA College Basketball Championship. This was the 5th national championship for Duke and their head coach Mike Krzyzewski. Only John Wooden, with his 10 titles, has more than Krzyzewski now.

In a match-up of top seeds, Duke outscored Wisconsin by 14 points in the final 13 minutes to turn a 9-point deficit into a 5-point win. Tyus Jones led the way for Duke with 23 points, while Grayson Allen added 16 points in only 21 minutes. Meanwhile, the possible #1 pick in the next NBA Draft, Jahlil Okafor, had a modest 10 points, and only 3 rebounds.

Player of the year, Frank Kaminsky of Wisconsin, had his way with Okafor, scoring 21 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. But it wasn’t enough. After Wisconsin upset Kentucky 71-64 in the Final 4, the Badgers looked to be on a mission to win the championship, however the Blue Devils had other thoughts.

Duke didn’t even win their own conference. They lost in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament to Notre Dame 74-64. Notre Dame lost in the Elite 8 to Kentucky 66-64. Duke responded to that loss by winning 6 in a row and another national championship.

Kentucky was the #1 ranked team for the entire basketball season, winning their first 38 games, and being compared to the all-time great college teams. But like the 1991 UNLV Running Rebels, they couldn’t close the deal. Now they will be remembered for blowing a chance at immortality. Indiana in 1976 is still the last team to complete a season undefeated.

In the Women’s National Championship Game, the result was predictable. Connecticut won it’s 3rd title in a row, beating rival Notre Dame 63-53 in the final game. Head coach Geno Auriemma won his 10th national championship, tying him with the previously mentioned John Wooden, and Phil Jackson, as the only coaches in any sport, on any level with 10 championships.

Notre Dame was in their 4th championship game in the last 5 years, but have lost them all. Their only title was back in 2001. UConn and Notre Dame used to be in the Big East together, but Notre Dame has since moved to the ACC.

The two-time AP Player of the Year, Breanna Stewart, has now won 3 championships, and still has her senior year to go. There doesn’t seem to be anything keeping UConn from winning a 4th title in a row next year, barring major injuries. The women’s game has huge discrepancies between the upper echelon of teams and the rest of the field. All 4 #1 seeds made the Final 4. Of course 3 of the 4 #1 seeds in the Men’s field also made the Final 4.

Kentucky, Wisconsin, Duke & Michigan State Are In The Final 4

The Final 4 is now set. #1 seeds Kentucky, Wisconsin and Duke have made it to the final weekend in Indianapolis, along with #7 seed Michigan State. Duke plays Michigan State in the early game on Saturday, April 4th, while Kentucky will face Wisconsin in the game that follows.

Kentucky is attempting to finish the season as the first undefeated national champion in college basketball since Indiana in 1976. The 38-0 Wildcats had all they could handle on Saturday with 3rd ranked Notre Dame in the Midwest Regional Final. The Fighting Irish led most of the second half, but fell short on a last second 3-pointer to lose 68-66. This was the first time Notre Dame made it to the Elite 8 since 1979.

Wisconsin eliminated the 2nd ranked Arizona Wildcats 85-78 in the West Regional Final. Arizona was one of the favorites to upset a top seed, and qualify for the Final 4, but the Badgers were able to hold them off. Frank Kaminsky led the way with 29 points for Wisconsin.

There was also a match-up between the 2 top seeds in the South Regional Final, with Duke beating Gonzaga 66-52. The Blue Devils will be in their 12th Final 4 since Mike Krzyzewski took over as their head coach. The 12 Final 4 appearances ties Krzyzewski with the legendary John Wooden of UCLA for the most Final 4s in a career by a coach.

The only non-top seed to make it to the Final 4 is 7th seeded Michigan State. The Spartans beat Louisville 76-70 in overtime to win the East region. Top seeded Villanova was upset by North Carolina State in the round of 32 in the East. The Big 10 Conference ended up with 2 teams in the Final 4, Michigan State and Wisconsin.

I’m picking Duke to defeat Michigan State in the first Final 4 game. Duke has been the most impressive team in the tournament so far, disposing of a very good Gonzaga team in the Elite 8 by 14 points. This game will feature 2 great college coaches facing off with Krzyzewski and Tom Izzo of Michigan State.

In the other Final 4 game, I’m going with Wisconsin in an upset of Kentucky. Kentucky had a huge size advantage over Notre Dame, and barely squeezed by. With unanimous All-America selection 7-foot center Kaminsky, the Badgers will alleviate much of the size advantage the Wildcats enjoy over many of their opponents.

In the championship game, I’m once again taking Wisconsin. I think Kaminsky will impose his will on the Blue Devils, in what should be a great final game.

The NCAA Tournament Is Down To The Sweet 16

The NCAA college basketball tournament is down to the Sweet 16, and one top seed has already been eliminated, Villanova. North Carolina State took down the #1 seeded Wildcats in the East 71-68, in the round of 32.

The only double digit-seeded team remaining is UCLA. The team that has won more national championships than any other school, 11, was thought by many not to even deserve a spot in this year’s field of 68 teams, but are still alive in the final 16 teams, thanks to a controversial goaltending call to finish their 60-59 upset of #6 SMU in the first round, and an easy win in the second round.

The other top seeds, Kentucky, Duke and Wisconsin, are still alive, with Kentucky and Duke cruising into the Sweet 16. Wisconsin had a little tougher time, beating Coastal Carolina 86-72 in their first round game, and Oregon 72-65 in their second.

The first round, which I refer to, is technically the second round, because of the 4 play-in games, which reduces the field from 68 down to 64 teams. In this aforementioned first round, in fact on Thursday, the first full day of the tournament was rampant with big upsets and near upsets.

Two #3 seeds went down on Thursday, Baylor and Iowa State. Baylor lost to Georgia State 57-56, on a game-wining 3-pointer made by the head coach’s son R.J. Hunter. Ron, the elder Hunter, fell out of his chair, which he was resigned to, because of injuring his Achilles celebrating his team winning the Sun Belt Tournament.

Iowa State was upset by Alabama Birmingham 60-59. With the win, #14 UAB played #11 UCLA in the second round, which UCLA won easily, 92-75. UCLA faces #2 Gonzaga in the Sweet 16. Gonzaga thumped Iowa in the second round 87-68.

Other than #1 Villanova being upset, the next biggest surprise, according to seedings, was #7 Wichita State beating #2 Kansas in the Midwest region. Kansas refuses to schedule Wichita State in the regular season, so the Shockers decided to give the Jayhawks a shock of their own, whipping Kansas 78-65 in the round of 32.

The Sweet 16 resumes on Thursday, and the Elite 8 starts on Saturday. After this weekend, the NCAA Tournament will be down to the Final 4. The big question is whether anyone can take down 36-0 Kentucky, and prevent them from finishing the season as the first undefeated national champion since Indiana in 1976.

Kentucky plays #5 West Virginia next, and if they win, will face the winner of the Wichita State-Notre Dame game. If Kentucky does win the West region, they will face the West region winner, which should be either top seeded Wisconsin, or #2 Arizona, who has been dominant in wins over Texas Southern and Ohio State.

Duke is the favorite to win the other side of the bracket, but with Gonzaga in the South, and teams like Oklahoma, Louisville and Michigan State in the East, their road to the championship won’t be easy. Enjoy March Madness, and I’ll check back in with my picks when we get to the Final 4.

Players Switching Teams And Retiring In The NFL

As free agency is in it’s closing hours, NFL players are switching teams, as well as some notable players are retiring. Last week the Philadelphia Eagles traded former league rushing leader LeSean McCoy to the Buffalo Bills for linebacker Kiko Alonso. Alonso played for Eagles’ head coach Chip Kelly, when he was at the University of Oregon.

The Eagles attempted to fill the void at running back through free agency with former San Francisco 49er Frank Gore, but he is reportedly having second thoughts. If Gore does leave the 49ers, he appears to be just one of many. 7-time Pro Bowl linebacker Patrick Willis is reportedly going to retire at only 30 years of age, and maybe defensive tackle Justin Smith could follow him out the door.

In a surprise to me, until I saw how much it would cost them, the Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots declined the $20 million option for 6-time Pro Bowl cornerback Darrelle Revis. So once again, hired gun Revis is back on the open market. After spending his first 6 years with the New York Jets, Revis played in 2013 for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, before spending last year with the Patriots.

The biggest signing of free agency is the Miami Dolphins’ acquisition of Ndamukong Suh, formerly of the Detroit Lions. The contract is for $114 million over the next 6 years, with $60 million guaranteed. Suh is now the highest paid defensive player in NFL history. While he is a great run stopper, and a very disruptive player, he is also commonly known as the dirtiest player in the NFL.

Highlighting his many dubious actions over his short career so far, was the Thanksgiving Day stomping on the arm of Evan Dietrich-Smith a few years ago, who was then on the Green Bay Packers. Suh lied at the time, saying it was an accident, when it was obviously on purpose. Maybe he’s not real clear on the fact that all NFL plays are on television, and played back in instant replay.

The Dolphins are taking a huge risk signing Suh to this enormous contract. Because of his previous offenses, any future suspension will be substantial, and you can count on him doing something stupid again. I’m sure he will help their poor run defense, but he’s not worth that much money, and especially not the $60 million guaranteed for a player with a checkered past.

Other notable players cut by NFL teams include wide receiver Andre Johnson of the Houston Texans. Johnson is the all-time leading receiver in the short history of the franchise. The Pittsburgh Steelers cut veteran defensive end Brett Keisel, and they might also end up cutting future Hall of Fame safety Troy Polamalu.

The free agency period is over on March 10th at 4 p.m. EST. I’m sure there will be a few more moves before then, but time is running out. Next up is the NFL Draft, starting on April 30th.

Joey Logano Wins The Daytona 500

Joey Logano won his first Daytona 500 on Sunday. He became the second youngest driver ever to win the Great American Race, at 24 years of age. Trevor Bayne was the youngest, when he won the 2011 race at only 20 years old.

While the race ended under caution, it didn’t dampen the spirits of the driver known as “Sliced Bread”, in a reference to him being the best thing since sliced bread. As complimentary as the meaning of the name, I’m not sure I’d want any nickname with bread in it.

Logano led 31 laps, and finished just ahead of the 2014 Sprint Cup Champion Kevin Harvick. Defending Daytona 500 champion Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished 3rd.

In what is supposed to be his final Daytona 500, Jeff Gordon was dominant early, leading more laps than anyone with 87, before being involved in a crash, and finishing in 33rd position.

While 6 of the Top 9 cars were Chevrolets, Logano won in a Ford. The other 2 in the aforementioned Top 9 were Toyotas. The Chevys were strong all week, but couldn’t get past that one Ford at the end of the 500.

Other notable drivers in the field were 6-time Sprint Cup Champion Jimmie Johnson, who finished in 5th place, just behind Denny Hamlin, and Tony Stewart, who finished in 42nd place, after an early crash. Danica Patrick, once again the only woman in the field, finished in her familiar position in the 20s, in 21st place.

As the leaders headed down the back straightaway, there was a crash involving 8 cars, so the checkered flag came out with the caution flag, which signified the end of the race, and no more passing was allowed. Logano was leading when the crash occurred, so he remained in front to win the race.

This was Logano’s 9th win of his career on the Nascar Sprint Cup circuit, and the 2nd Daytona 500 win for car owner Roger Penske. Penske also has 15 Indianapolis 500 wins as car owner. Logano is already in his 7th year on the Sprint Cup Circuit at 24.

Nascar has now started, as always, with their biggest race of the year, reversing the manner of every other sport that I know of, which finishes their season with their championship game or series. Yes, they end the season with the Chase, which has been changed frequently, but their “Super Bowl” is over now, after the first weekend, with 9 months of racing to go. I just think that’s a little strange.

The NFL Post-Super Bowl Arrests Are Alarming

After the Super Bowl on February 1st, there was an alarming number of arrests linked to current NFL players, as well as a former player, who is in the Hall of Fame. The three arrests to current NFL players all happened on the same day, February 3rd. I will give them to you in order of my interest, from least to most.

Dallas Cowboy running back Joseph Randle was arrested on suspicion of marijuana possession, after police were called out for a domestic violence incident in Wichita, Kansas. This was Randle’s 2nd arrest since last October.

Not to be outdone, Green Bay Packer’s defensive tackle Letroy Guion was arrested in Starke, Florida on felony charges of possession of marijuana and a firearm, after being pulled over for a traffic stop. Guion had 357 grams of marijuana, and a 9mm handgun. He also had over $190,000 in cash in his car. But don’t we all carry that much cash around with us in our car? You never know when you need some emergency cash.

My personal favorite of the arrests of NFL players after the Super Bowl, was that of linebacker D’Qwell Jackson. He was arrested for misdemeanor assault in Washington D.C., in a dispute over a parking spot. I heard he punched a pizza delivery guy over the parking spot. While I certainly wouldn’t want to get punched by an NFL linebacker, but the story just struck me as funny, and stupid on Jackson’s part.

Now to the arrest involving the former NFL player. Hall of Fame defensive tackle Warren Sapp was arrested on February 2nd, for allegedly soliciting and assaulting a prostitute. Sapp, who played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders, has been suspended from his job with the NFL Network indefinitely.

The chances that these players took, being in the public eye, with everything they do being reported in the media, is shocking. Although, I’m sure they didn’t think of the repercussions of their actions when they were happening. Randle, as a repeat offender, and Guion are in serious trouble. They could end up being cut from their current team, and hoping for another team to give them another chance. Not to mention possible jail time.

In respect to Randle, after the Ray Rice incident, the NFL is really cracking down on domestic violence cases. Guion seems to be a drug dealer, based on what was in his car. Jackson will be suspended, but his arrest isn’t as serious as the other 2 current players. Sapp has already basically lost his job, and he is also facing possible jail time.

The NFL has the highest number of arrests occurring, mainly because they have a lot more players in their league, than any other professional sport. More than twice as many as the NHL and MLB, and 4 times as many as the NBA. But do these guys go crazy as soon as the season is over? The Super Bowl is on February 1st, and 4 arrests occur within the next 2 days.

No other NFL players have been arrested in the next 12 days plus, so maybe that’s it for a while. I hope so. Let’s just hear about these players in player signings, free agency, and the sort, until the preseason starts back up in August.
