The Dallas Cowboys won their 5th consecutive game, beating the defending Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks 30-23 in Seattle on Sunday. This was not only a rare home defeat for the Seahawks, but it wasn’t even as close as the final score.
Cowboy running back DeMarco Murray has now started this season with 6 consecutive 100 yard rushing games. He has tied the all-time record held by Jim Brown. Murray rushed for 115 yards on 29 carries, and 1 touchdown. Seattle only rushed for 80 yards as a team in the game.
Dallas quarterback Tony Romo also outplayed Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson. Romo was 21 of 32 passing, for 250 yards, with 2 touchdowns and no interceptions. Wilson had an uncharacteristically poor outing, only completing half of his 28 passes, for a measly 126 yards and an interception, with no touchdown passes. Wilson did have a 9-yard touchdown run in the game.
The biggest surprise about the Cowboys’ success is from their defense, which was the worst in Dallas history last year. To hold the champs to a total of only 206 total yards is quite impressive. Meanwhile the Cowboys had 401 total yards. Seattle needed more than a 12th man in this game. This was only the 2nd regular season home loss with Wilson at quarterback, who is in his 3rd NFL season.
The Cowboys have endured 3 straight 8-8 seasons. Starting this season at 5-1 is obviously a tremendous improvement so far. They are tied for first place in the NFC East with the Philadelphia Eagles, who crushed the New York Giants 27-0 on Sunday Night Football. After just 6 games, this division looks destined to be a 2-team race for the rest of the season.
The Cowboys and Eagles do not meet until Thanksgiving day in Dallas, then again 2 weeks later in Philadelphia. The resurgence of the Cowboys is exactly what millions of Cowboy fans have been waiting for since the 1995 season, the last time Dallas won a Super Bowl. The Cowboys only have 2 playoff wins since then.
The NFL has to like the fact that “America’s Team” is relevant once again. Romo has taken an inordinate amount of blame for the team’s failure to make the playoffs lately. Last year, Romo had a very good year. But the defense was just too much for the offense to overcome, for more than 8 wins.
It’s still early in the season, but some “experts” are saying Dallas is the best team in the NFL after their road win over Seattle. They may look that way now, but the Cowboys have a recent history of flaming out at the end of seasons.
If Dallas can keep this solid play on offense and defense going for 3 more months, then they really could be a team to be reckoned with. But we have a long way to go, and a lot can change between October and the Super Bowl in February.
